Wale: fashion and hip hop

Think of this as the portrait of the artist about to blow up.
For the better part of the last year, the most important thing that came out of Washington, D.C. was the interminable run-up to the 2008 election. But for those with keen ears, the most exciting thing (all due respect to Barack Obama) has been an MC named Wale.
Lately, it's been 0-60 for the rapper (right). He’s gone from a budding artist spitting complex, fascinating rhymes on free mixtapes (check out his collaboration with DJ Nick Catchdubs 100 Miles & Running here) to touring with producer Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen) and getting signed to Interscope Records (via Ronson’s Allido imprint). He also did a guest rhyme on The Roots’ “Rising Up.”
But before the deal Wale began working on a little passion project called The Mixtape About Nothing, inspired by –- you guessed it –- Seinfeld. No kidding. No homilies to champagne, rims and drug dealing or bragging about sexual conquests. (OK, maybe some.) Just deft, rapid wordplay about Jerry, Larry David, Kramer and George (“My Costanzas stand like phantoms”). Oh, and then there’s that guest spot by Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
The Mixtape About Nothing, also produced by Catchdubs, is out Friday (download it for free here) and is likely just the beginning of the crazy awesomeness Wale has in store. If you want proof, check out the video for his take on Justice's “D.A.N.C.E.” after the jump.
To find out more, Listening Post chatted with Wale (pronounced “wah-lay”) awhile back about the importance of giving away music, working the Web, working with Pharrell Williams and making friends with Lindsay Lohan.

Nike Air Force 1 iD Bespoke by The Mayor

We recently interviewed The Mayor on his collecting habits and his 1000th pair of Air Force 1s. He’s added many more pairs since and yesterday his Air Force 1 iD Bespoke finally arrived at Nike Sportswear in New York. While the sneakers are just slightly different from what The Mayor designed, the outsole is suppose to be a solid red, they are amazing nonetheless. For the upper, dark denim is used to cover the entire base of the Air Force 1, red patent leather pops out on the swoosh, back tab and tongue label and for the lining a extremely lux brown leather. To finish off, the sole is icy translucent gum, old harness leather adorns the tongue and back of the shoes and on the lace lock MYR lasered in. Via Sneaker News

ALIFE x New Era - Ball Out 59Fifty Collection

When ALIFE first collaborated with Reebok on the original Ball Out Pump, it was a huge success across the world and soon became one of the most sought after Reebok shoes ever. Now ALIFE has taken the inspiration from the Ball Out sneaker to a New Era 59Fifty fitted cap collection consisting of a number of different colors all featuring the ALIFE logo on the front of the hat in large letters as well as a small ALIFE logo on the right panel of the hat and last but not least a New Era logo on the left panel of the fitted. Most importantly though each hat features the signature tennis ball felt material that has become a signature material from our friends over at ALIFE. You can pick up the hats now at ALIFE in New York City as well as ALIFE retailers worldwide.

Nike Air Marty McFly's

I wouldn't call myself a sneaker head at all but, I love great design and innovation.
I have been scoping out the Marty McFly's for awhile and found a great picture online and thought that whoever gets there hands on a pair of these must be happy.
But, lets keep it in perspective though. These, or any shoe for that matter, is not going to get you or anybody mad play with woman at all!
Buy because you like them!
Not for the game!

Original Fake

The Original Fake Autumn/Winter 2008 collection continues to deliver strong cut and sew pieces that other brands can’t. Between the signature KAWS’ graphics and the premium craftsmanship on each cut and sew piece, it’s no wonder the Original Fake line has done so well this season all over the world. This newest piece is a Chomper Hoodie featuring KAWS’ signature “X” across the chest and the signature “Chompers” down the side of the hoodie. You can pick this Chomper Hoodie up in the near future at select Original Fake retailers.

Train Makeover: Anime, Living Room and Homeless Shelter Edition
the days of New York City-style “train-bombing“, the practice of entire train cars getting completely spray-painted with tags and murals, anime & manga characters have been the favored choice of graffiti to the Japanese. Pink Tentacle compiled a very neat selection of train exteriors and interiors over the past several years. While the anime’d out trains are cool, the Japanese seem to be the most accepting to advertisers too. Ikea recently decked out a Kobe train in textiles like ALVINE BUKETT curtains and BLÅHÄGG blankets.
Turning train-cars into more comfortable habitats seems to be a theme for the Chinese too. They’re turning old subway cars into homeless shelters. Decked out with bunk-beds and heaters, they’re being used to accommodate refugees from the latest of deadly earthquakes. We’re only wishing Ikea could sneak a truckload of house-warming wares into the new temporary homes.

The Hundreds & Disney

streetwear brands have been coopting the likenesses of animated characters, specifically Disney characters, for decades. So it’s really interesting to hear that The Hundreds will be collaborating with The Walt Disney Company on a limited run collection. The LA and SF shops have already been made over with the Disney collection - anyone in the area who’s been to the stores, let us know what you find.

Sex organs of technology
There’s a video from the O’Reilly group where Joshua-Michele Ross interviews Kevin Kelly. Kelly discusses the rise of large scale co-operation and the similarity between technology and biology. A couple of quotes:
Socialism 2.0. We don’t have very good terms for what we’re seeing. Collectivism, communism, socialism which have negative connotations in American politics but in fact that’s what a lot of this is: Cooperation on a large scale. Elevating the common collective good and the individual at the same time. That’s the difference with communism which was about bring everyone down to a level.
…What does technology want? It wants us to be happy, it wants our co-operation. Right ow we’re the sexual organs of technology. It wants increasing diversity, increasing complexity, increasing energy density (efficiency), increasing specialization… The patterns that we see technology follows are the same patterns biology and evolution follows. In biology there is extinction, in technology we find that ideas and technologies remain and they are very hard to extinguish… There is almost no extinct technologies.

I will be doing more interviews and personnel profiles more often. I think it more interesting to hearing the news from the horses mouth.
My next interview will be Thrasher funds.
I have written once about them, but I want to revisit them and talk about their new and upcoming season of Thrasher TV.

The project looks to reconcile the primitive nature of ceramics (think traditional terracotta and porcelain) with its rather impressive physical attributes. Zirconium Oxide ranks second only to diamond on the hardness scale and resists scratches and abrasion far better than conventional plastics. The large ceramic pieces on either side also provide limitless space for creative design variations. The briefcase also employs leather straps for closure and handles for a supple, tactile counterpoint to the ceramic.

Downshift Session 2008

The Gran Turismo video game franchise for Playstation celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. For the racing game itself, its appearance back in 1998 all but changed the face of the racing world enabling gamers to get as close as possible to driving the four-wheeled beasts of their dreams. The car-reproduction within the game undergoes some mind-numbing detail to replicate the most authentic experience possible with elements of exhaust notes and minute details all undergoing intense scrutiny. To mark the decade anniversary, jeffstaple and company are hosting Downshift Session 2008 on Thursday as not only a celebration of Gran Turismo itself but also automotive design, music, art and gaming. The entertainment for the evening includes Eric Haze, Kid Sister & DJ Soul and the opportunity to race in live time trials. The VIP event will take place from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm with the doors opening for +21 general admission at 8:00 pm.

Levi’s x 686 The Times Limited Edition Box

Earlier this year, the Levis and 686 presented a collection that would effectively present an intersection of the world’s quintessential denim brand Levi’s with the technical, snowboarding-driven 686 brand. Together the two would combine an aesthetic and material choice which has become a staple for many around the world with denim and adorned it with technical specifications to endure the harsh mountain conditions. To commemorate this partnership, a special Levi’s x 686 The Times Limited Edition Box was created which features a box wrapped in Levi’s Genuine Selvedge Raw Denim with a colorful print pattern featuring iconic Levi’s imagery. The pants represent the world’s first 3L Technical Snowboard Raw Selvedge Denim Pant. Although the silhouette of the pant is similar to the previous releases, differences include a more relaxed cut, colorful lining, lighter-weight construction and selvedge back-pockets. Only 68 instances were produced for friends and family of 686 and will not be available for sale. After the jump is a video between 686 founder Mike West and Levi’s VP of Global Design Caroline Calvin as they discuss the relationship of the two brands and the product development aspect.

nobody dies!!!

As a member of the Japanese art community who has been heralded for their continual questioning of Japanese relationships with the outside world and its own societal institutions, artist Mr. presents his latest exhibition “Nobody Dies” later this month. His depictions of lolitas are a self-examination and re-appropriation of lolitas in different and unfamiliar contexts which began with Mr.’s obsession with scribbling lolita images on receipts and ticket stubs. Also worth noting was Mr.’s contribution to the capsule of Supreme decks alongside Murakami last year. “Nobody Dies” opens up Tuesday, October 21st and concludes January 10th, 2009.

The Creator Class
enjoy!
On Friday, I will be presenting my new thoughts on the emerging Creator Class. It’s a focus on multi-skilled creative minds who feel they can turn their hand to multiple product and service offerings, often challenging they way established industries operate.
Some of the people that I’d put in this category are featured in a new book called Design Entrepreneur: Turning Graphic Design Into Goods That Sell. This book features folks like Paul Budnitz of KidRobot and other graphic designers turned product developers.
I think these design entrepreneurs fit within a larger group I’m calling Creator Class. I want to make sure it includes creative minds that may not use graphic design as the center of their work - folks like Jay Parkinson, the “Web 2.0 doctor” (see our video on him here).
BUT…. I NEED YOUR HELP - I haven’t completed the presentation and with my travel to the opposite time zone, my head is fuddled and I can’t think of these individuals (and sometimes duos) who are making change. I’d love some help - could you make some suggestions in the comment box below?
THANKS!

Hipsters Will Save Our Economy

While retailers geared toward consumers under 45–the Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch and Express–have struggled in the past year to increase sales, hipster-centric clothing outlet Urban Outfitters has reported record results.
Citing many other examples including Marc Jacobs (”Ten years ago, college kids carried backpacks…On any college campus today you’ll find moneyed girls carrying Jacobs’ $1,000 leather handbags”) and Cooper Mini (”the company saw a 15% year-over-year increase in the number of units sold” while other car sales have lagged) — the article makes a good point.

Trumbo

Dalton Trumbo was the first blacklisted writer to win an Academy Award. However, he could not claim the award until years later because he had been forced to write under a pseudonym. Trumbo was one of the Hollywood Ten and even spent a year in jail as a result of investigations into Communist influences in the motion picture industry. This documentary is fascinating not just for its examination of a bizarre period in American history where fear replaced reason and innocent men were jailed, but also for how Trumbo dealt with these hardships. One of the most successful writers in Hollywood’s history, he fled to Mexico and struggled by, earning a pittance for his phenomenal work. He shared his frustration with friends through extraordinarily entertaining letters, read out with vivacity by some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Letters to the phone company and his son are some of the most entertaining. Previously I knew little of Dalton Trumbo, but now feel terrible for not discover this extraordinarly entertaining and touching story earlier. The devotion, conviction and creativity with which Trumbo attacks every hardship is inspirational, and the story is intelligently put together with archive footage, interviews along with the reading of the letters.

Converse 1HUND(RED) x Wood Wood All Star Hi-Top

As the 26th artist to work with Converse's current creative initiative, the 1HUND(RED) Artists' footwear collaboration for PRODUCT (RED), CH favorites Wood Wood designed a stylish monochromatic rendition of the classic Chuck Taylor.
A minimalist take on the All Star Hi-Top, the Danish group used a smooth suede upper, laces and sole — all in a matching powdery grayish purple. The perforated upper reveals Wood Wood's constellation pattern logo and all Converse branding is all-white. Keeping with the PRODUCT (RED) theme, the red top lace holes lend the shoe a dot of color.
Available 1 October 2008 at specialty retailers, such as Colette in Paris, Dover St. Market in London, Undefeated in LA and Oak, Dave's Quality Meat and Nom de Guerre in NYC, 10% of the sales goes to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. It's about time your sneaker obsession went to some good, but you'll have to act fast 'cause these are bound to go quick.
Check out the whole collection and get more info on 1 HUND(RED) Artists Footwear Collaboration at Converse.

Cia de Foto

Highly stylized, poignant and emotional are words that come to mind upon first encounter with Cia de Foto's breathtaking photographs. The São Paulo photo agency has been going strong for more than a few years now but has just launched a blog that shares news on happenings like what exciting project they're doing next or which international photo event they're participating in (for example, they managed the entire São Paulo Photo Week last month). Although most of the blog is in Portuguese, the pictures — spanning a variety of subjects from everyday Brazilian life to portraits — speak for themselves.

Assignments for the mainstream press are their bread and butter but Rafael Jacinto, one of the founding members of Cia de Foto, emphasized to me once that they also feel it's important to do projects they are personally interested in, a philosophy that shows through in their work.
If you'll be in Santiago, Chile for the Foto America biennial event between 29 October 2008 and 16 January 2009, you can check out a panel with them at the Museu Nacional de Bellas Artes on 30 Ocober 2008.
SomeRightsReserved

SomeRightsReserved is the awesome online store of the London-based KithKin design collective. The shop, billed as "a download revolution" features both digital products (such as music and fonts) and directions/instructions for building physical items.

The RepRap, short for Replicating Rapid-prototyper, is an incredible DIY prototyping machine. True, any number of good machines are available for tens of thousands of dollars, but the plans for the RepRap are free and the parts needed to build it around $1,000, prompting one reviewer to proclaim "Think of RepRap as a China on your desktop." Once you've made one it can—literally—replicate itself.
We love the idea of an ideas marketplace. Best of all, many downloads are free, most under £5, and the most expensive £10./
