Christopher Wool for Supreme

Supreme has released news regarding its latest artist-collaborated collection of skate decks. Bringing to light numerous iconic and established artists’ over the years, Christopher Wool is no exception to the mix as the Chicago-born native who’s art-world career in 1984. With 1984 becoming the year that marked his first solo show, Christopher Wool’s work is often featured in black and white primarily as his earlier works were characterized by “tightly controlled, gestural drip paintings and canvases utilizing decorative rollers on white backgrounds to produce floral and gate-like images.” Three years later, the artist would advance his style dabbling extensively into black/white stencil works with selective phrases. His consistency would lead him to showcase his art at the such venues as the Whitney Biennial 1989, Museum of Modern Art, New York, the New Museum of Art Lucerne, Switzerland, and Contemporary Museum of Art, Los Angeles. Three limited-edition skate decks designed by Christopher Wool will release on October 2nd stateside and October 4th in Japan.

Trumbo

Dalton Trumbo was the first blacklisted writer to win an Academy Award. However, he could not claim the award until years later because he had been forced to write under a pseudonym. Trumbo was one of the Hollywood Ten and even spent a year in jail as a result of investigations into Communist influences in the motion picture industry. This documentary is fascinating not just for its examination of a bizarre period in American history where fear replaced reason and innocent men were jailed, but also for how Trumbo dealt with these hardships. One of the most successful writers in Hollywood’s history, he fled to Mexico and struggled by, earning a pittance for his phenomenal work. He shared his frustration with friends through extraordinarily entertaining letters, read out with vivacity by some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Letters to the phone company and his son are some of the most entertaining. Previously I knew little of Dalton Trumbo, but now feel terrible for not discover this extraordinarly entertaining and touching story earlier. The devotion, conviction and creativity with which Trumbo attacks every hardship is inspirational, and the story is intelligently put together with archive footage, interviews along with the reading of the letters.

Converse 1HUND(RED) x Wood Wood All Star Hi-Top

As the 26th artist to work with Converse's current creative initiative, the 1HUND(RED) Artists' footwear collaboration for PRODUCT (RED), CH favorites Wood Wood designed a stylish monochromatic rendition of the classic Chuck Taylor.
A minimalist take on the All Star Hi-Top, the Danish group used a smooth suede upper, laces and sole — all in a matching powdery grayish purple. The perforated upper reveals Wood Wood's constellation pattern logo and all Converse branding is all-white. Keeping with the PRODUCT (RED) theme, the red top lace holes lend the shoe a dot of color.
Available 1 October 2008 at specialty retailers, such as Colette in Paris, Dover St. Market in London, Undefeated in LA and Oak, Dave's Quality Meat and Nom de Guerre in NYC, 10% of the sales goes to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. It's about time your sneaker obsession went to some good, but you'll have to act fast 'cause these are bound to go quick.
Check out the whole collection and get more info on 1 HUND(RED) Artists Footwear Collaboration at Converse.

Cia de Foto

Highly stylized, poignant and emotional are words that come to mind upon first encounter with Cia de Foto's breathtaking photographs. The SĂ£o Paulo photo agency has been going strong for more than a few years now but has just launched a blog that shares news on happenings like what exciting project they're doing next or which international photo event they're participating in (for example, they managed the entire SĂ£o Paulo Photo Week last month). Although most of the blog is in Portuguese, the pictures — spanning a variety of subjects from everyday Brazilian life to portraits — speak for themselves.

Assignments for the mainstream press are their bread and butter but Rafael Jacinto, one of the founding members of Cia de Foto, emphasized to me once that they also feel it's important to do projects they are personally interested in, a philosophy that shows through in their work.
If you'll be in Santiago, Chile for the Foto America biennial event between 29 October 2008 and 16 January 2009, you can check out a panel with them at the Museu Nacional de Bellas Artes on 30 Ocober 2008.

SomeRightsReserved is the awesome online store of the London-based KithKin design collective. The shop, billed as "a download revolution" features both digital products (such as music and fonts) and directions/instructions for building physical items.

The RepRap, short for Replicating Rapid-prototyper, is an incredible DIY prototyping machine. True, any number of good machines are available for tens of thousands of dollars, but the plans for the RepRap are free and the parts needed to build it around $1,000, prompting one reviewer to proclaim "Think of RepRap as a China on your desktop." Once you've made one it can—literally—replicate itself.
We love the idea of an ideas marketplace. Best of all, many downloads are free, most under £5, and the most expensive £10./

It’s Not Information Overload. It’s Filter Failure

Clay Shirky gave a great speech at the recent Web 2.0 Expo which contains a wealth of insightful thoughts about our modern problems of managing information. He says that the issue is not information overload, it’s the failure of filtering systems. Shirky believes that information overload has been around since the invention of the printing press, and it’s nothing really new. What is the issue, is in the forms and flows that information is now taking. When information is coming and going at and from you from so many different directions, the social systems and filters that used to manage the flows breakdown from stress. He says we need to re-think a lot of things, including social norms, to understand and deal with all the new ways of living technology has provided.
Manga Sparks Wine Craze in Asia

The Japanese comic book “Kami no Shizuku” translates to “The Drops of God”. It’s the story of Shizuku Kanzaki, a wine enthusiast who is on a heroic quest to find the 12 best wines in the world. Described as “The Da Vinci Code” set in a Tokyo bar, the story is part mystery and part richly detailed, surreal wine review.
The curious thing, is that the Drops of God has been creating an explosive new demand for wines in Asia. A mention of a specific wine can boost sales tremendously.
The Telegraph reports:
Shizuku Kanzaki’s adventures in the comic Kami no Shizuku lead him to sample different bottles in every copy and the featured wines regularly become overnight hits, in some cases tripling sales.
The character was sent on his mission by a request in his father’s will. Once he tracks down the “Twelve Apostles” he will be rewarded with keys to his father’s wine cellar, which because the man was a great wine critic, is a valuable prize.
The comic is read by 500,000 Japanese each week and his sway over the wine market is spreading throughout Asia. Some wine importers say they have never seen such a powerful single influence on their business.
In Taiwan a single reference to a relatively obscure French terroir led to dozens of cases of the wine being sold within a few days.
He has also influenced the South Korean market, where translations of the comic have boosted sales of wine from less than a third of the market to around 70 per cent of alcohol sales.

Stanton’s DaScratch Helps Kill Vinyl

Vinyl is dead. Long live vinyl! Now, it pains me to report this, because records are great, but it seems like it may be the end of the road for the media format (at least as far as a DJ staple). Stanton has released the DaScratch media controller which is one of many new ways to control digital music. The multi-functional device lets DJ’s control playback of music files using popular programs, including Serato, Traktor and Ableton. DaScratch can manipulate music files like a traditional turntable but also adds in effects, eq controls and loop trigger buttons. Look for more devices like this to become the new standard for DJs, as they open up new creative possibilities.

Four hundred years after Gutenberg’s death, “metal type” was still being made the way he made it. Using files and gravers, a steel rod was cajoled into the shape of a backwards letter; this steel ‘punch’ was struck into a brass blank, called a ‘matrix,’ which would serve as a mold for the casting of individual pieces of lead type. (The term ‘lead type’ is a convenience: the material of printing type is more accurately called ‘type metal,’ as it contains a special typefounders’ blend of lead, tin, and antimony.)
This elaborate pas de cinque requires five different materials, each chosen for a different metallurgical property. Steel’s tensile strength helps it hold small details and resist the blow of the hammer; the malleability of brass makes it a good candidate for receiving the steel; lead, cheap and abundant, has a low melting point; tin is more fluid than lead when molten (yet more durable than lead when it hardens); and antimony is highly crystalline, giving printing types more crisply defined edges.
The few typefaces that have departed from this process have done so for very good reason. Common were large typefaces that would have been impractical to cut in steel (and impossible to strike into brass) which were instead made as wood forms, which were pressed into sand molds from which metal type was cast. But a lingering mystery are the Chalcographia in the collection of the EnschedĂ© foundry in Haarlem, said to have been made with ‘brass punches.’ James Mosley corrects the record on his Typefoundry blog, explaining the types’ unusual gestation through a convoluted five-part process. The photographs, like the types themselves, are marvelous. —JH

How to start your own t-shirt line in 8 steps
I found this on hypebeast.com forum...So for those of you that are interested in starting your own clothing line here you go! I hope you enjoy.
If i am wrong anywhere, feel free to point it out so i can correct it. there were hyperlinks too so if you visit this site you will get it.
From this site:
8 Steps to starting your own t-shirt clothing line. Take this advise loosely.
1. Planning ($1,000 to $5,000) - Save Money and sketch ideas. It is important that you think of the niche you would like to take on and that you belong and love this niche. Don’t do something just because you think it is profitable when you have no passion for it. Lastly, while you are saving your pennies, think about whether you really want to get into selling t-shirts and if you are fit for the industry. In the long run, it just won’t work if there is no passion or commitment.
2. Legalize your company (<$500) - Create a company name and make it legal at LegalZoom.com. At LegalZoom.com, you can obtain a seller’s permit, EIN (tax purposes), and DBA without the headache of filling out government forms. Instead, LegalZoom does it all for you after you fill out a few simple questionnaires for a very reasonable fee.
3. Artwork ($0 to $400) - Find an artist (or teach yourself) who can draw on Adobe Illustrator ($400), Adobe Photoshop ($400), GIMP (Free Photo tool), or Inkscape (FREE Vector tool). You can choose to either make that artist your partner or contract them at a per shirt rate.
4. T-shirt Stock ($500 to $1,000) – Find a t-shirt wholesaler around your area. They should be willing to sell to you if you have the $ at a wholesale price. Or, if you find a mom and pop retail t-shirt shop that sells t-shirts that you like, ask them if they would be willing to sell to large quantities at a wholesale price. The price should range from $1.50 to $2.50 a shirt and beyond that is pretty high. I recommend the streetwear standard of AAA.
5. Printing ($500 to $4,000) - who can print as well as sew on labels for you. This should be someone local so you can approve designs in person without waiting. Messages and concerns can easily be conveyed with in-person dialogue. Check out the Yellow Pages for “Screen Printing.”
6. Sell Online at BigCartel.com ($0) -where it is extremely easy to list products and collect money from sales. They specialize only on the upcoming small startup clothing brands so you would feel comfortable starting there. With your very own BigCartel store, you can list 5 products with an image for free!
7. Bookkeeping ($0) – Use OpenOffice.org’s spreadsheets and word processing documents to store all your company’s information. Be sure to keep receipts of transactions and take notes of little expenses like gas for trips to the printers or website fees. This information is not only good for when you have to file your taxes but would keep your expenses on track. It is very important to keep track of the whole project in order to determine how much it actually costs to create a few dozen/hundred shirts. When you know this, you can determine your price point to wholesale or sell online at BigCartel.com. It would be foolish if you did not do this which could lead to negative profits because expenses add up.
8. Collect Money and Expand - use Myspace, Facebook, Linkedin, WallyChamp, Blogs, discussion forums, and other networks where your target demographic’s niche is in cyberspace to put the word out. You should also open up your own website with GoDaddy where you can buy a domain for about $10 and host it with them for less than $100 a year.

Germanys first and only Hip Hop academy - Pop academy
Imagine going to university to study to be a pop star or to manage a rock band. Well, this dream has become a reality at Germany's Pop Academy in Mannheim. And it wouldn't be possible without a sizeable EU investment.
From the outside, the Pop Academy looks like the other concrete warehouses lining the canal in an industrial suburb of Mannheim. But step inside and you enter a unique university that teaches musicians and business students the ins and outs of the music industry. It is the only one of its kind in Germany.
Students here emerge with a Bachelor of Arts degree by taking subjects such as songwriting, DJing and contract law, said Sebastian Hornik, the Pop Academy's spokesperson.
"We teach pop, or pop culture, and we make sure we link theory with practice," Hornik said. He said a student learning songwriting also had to learn business theory, contract law, music licensing and how record companies work.
"It's extremely important, because at the end of the three years, you are practically a small business and you need to know the rules of the game," Hornik said. "It's only when you understand and live pop that you can sell it."
Students have to prove their dedication to music
The Pop Academy started up in 2003. A year later, it moved into its new building worth 3.8 million euros ($5 million) -- half of which was funded by the European Union. Each year, the Pop Academy takes on 55 new students, who study for a Bachelor of Arts in either Pop Music or Music Business.
Bildunterschrift: GroĂŸansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: Students have to prove themselves onstage
The musicians have to undergo a rigorous audition process. And the business students need to not only have good grades, but also have proven dedication to the music industry.
According to Hornik, the academy requires two years of industry experience -- either in the business sector, such as work experience at a record company, or more hands-on experience, such as managing a band.
"The musicians obviously have to have played in a band, and they have to prove that with posters or flyers from concerts," Hornik said. "Here at the Pop Academy, we start at a certain level."
An opportunity to dedicate oneself to music
Joe Falk, a third-year student majoring in songwriting and singing, said he never would have taken the step to become a full-time musician if he hadn't received a spot at the Pop Academy.
"I was too cowardly; I am just too German for that," Falk said. "Here, I've learned all the business know-how that you need as a musician. I've also improved dramatically because I have the opportunity to play music full-time, and to completely dedicate myself to music."
Bildunterschrift: GroĂŸansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: Ryan Rauscher is interested in the business side of things
Joe is full of praise for the academy. He said that although he didn't exactly love the business subjects, they have proved extremely useful.
Fellow student Ryan Rauscher doesn't want to be a rock star. Rather, he wants to help rock stars get famous via the Internet. Rauscher started off studying business at a normal German university before applying to the Pop Academy.
Rauscher said there are advantages and disadvantages in both systems. The size of the classes, which run between six and 40 people for example, were much smaller than at university, he said.
"But here at the academy, you also have a lot of people giving seminars that come from the industry, and they have never taught before," Rauscher said. "Sometimes, they just miss the mark."
Trying to keep the music industry in Mannheim
Germany's musicians tend to live in the northern cities of Berlin and Hamburg. Both have a thriving arts scene, and are somewhat cooler than the southern German city of Mannheim. With a population of only 300,000, Mannheim is a gritty industrial city with one of the highest percentages of immigrants in the country.
Bildunterschrift: GroĂŸansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: Xavier Naidoo is the most famous musician from Mannheim
But like other industrial cities, such as Glasgow or Manchester, the city does have a reputation for music -- especially since successful soul singers such as Xavier Naidoo and the hip hop group Söhne Mannheims hit the charts in the past few years.
Mannheim was eligible for EU regional development funding because it qualified as a structurally weak region. Hornik said it's hoped that once the students at the Pop Academy have completed their degrees, they'll stay on and rent an office in the nearby Music Park. This new complex of offices was specifically built for those in the industry.
"They (the EU) don't just want to provide an education, but also support the region," Hornik said. "They hope people here will make connections and stay here, hopefully in the Music Park."
There are hopes the music scene will eventually establish itself in Mannheim and then also make an economic impact.
"That's why they pumped money in," Hornik said.
Singer-songwriter Falk for one said he planned to continue living in the region. Who knows, in a decade or two, Germany's musicians could be heading south instead of north in their search for fame and fortune.

I may have upset some readers!
To those of you that read this blog, I have written a lot of posts about everything that relates to my world and how I see.
While doing this, I may have upset or made a few people uncomfortable with some of my comments.
So, for those of you that have felt or feel offended, please accept my deepest apology. There is one reader in particular, Nancy. She has written a few comments regarding one post inparticular, black man in an elevator.....
I wanted to let everyone know that fighting fire with fire, and commetting ignorant actions against others in retaliating isnt going to change anything. Forgiveness and understanding others is probably a better route to go.
So, Nancy. Thank you for you comments and I will look out for more.

Obama tees sweeping the nation!
As the election is coming up in less than 2 months, it seems like Obama tees are popping up everywhere. Many are pretty straightforward...even more are pretty wack. There are some that are really pretty good - most of you probably know about Undercrwn's Obama O-Face tee, as featured right here on Hypebeast - comical genius:

Not bad at all. I've been critical of a lot of Obama tees because so many seem cheesy and clumsily put together...Well check this one out. It's by Peoples Republic of Clothing, an up and coming brand from Seattle. Their Obama Fresh tee features an old school pic of Obama posing with his high school hoops squad.Looks like hip hop star Common and Kaba Modern from America's Best Dance Crew have already picked up theirs, so this brand seems pretty legit with their growth

Comes in black and white for both men's and women's fits. I found it at http://www.prcclothing.bigcartel.com/ - they have some other shirts that are pretty dope too.
What do you guys think?

Home foreclosures....Who is suffering?
I realize that our great nation is in deep trouble...What happened? Where did it start?
I sit here in my apartment in Mannheim, Germany, looking across the pond wondering is it a good time to come back to the states?
I would like to hear from those of you that are being affected from this instances; Hurricane Ivan, home foreclosed, lost job, or just any problem.
I am sure we would like to hear from people who really count. The working people, the single mothers, working parents, college students, elders, etc....
Leave a comment so we can all discuss this issue.

black man in an elevator...comment
"I'm wondering whether a white woman "clutching" her purse when a black man walks into an elevator with her would be considered "ignorance," and not "racism?"I'm not suggesting that if I were a black man, her gesture wouldn't insult me, etc., however, racism is pure hatred of another race just because of their race. Fear is an emotional response. And, it can be based on ignorance.I'm not trying to downplay racism, because I'm not. But, we all have fears, and usually these fears are learned responses from experience, or from what we see watching tv, etc. I don't blame you for feeling the way you do, though. But, isn't it better for you to try and see all sides of an issue?
Take care.
Nancy"
Thank you Nancy for your comment regarding the clip. I do realize we all come from different places with different backgrounds. I do agree with you, in regards to our fears are learned response from experience.
By no means will I disagree.
I have and will continue to look at this issue from all angles. Unless you have felt like this woman then, I would hope that you would agree with the gentleman. I believe that the gentleman would not have said anything if the woman did react the way she did.
In turn she did, and so did he....... learned response from past experiences!
I appreciate your time and hope to hear more from you.
Thank,
Jason

Gizmodo point us to a scary clause in the new Google Chrome Browser end license user agreement that looks like it says Google owns everything you publish and create while using Chrome. Hmmm. This does not look good, but hopefully someone will come along and explain that this does not mean what it seems to.

Selling Lots of Little Media: Micro Sales Add Up

Forbes has a story about amateur photographers who are making decent money posting their personal pictures for sale on stock photography sites. iStockphoto and Shutterstock are two sites that allow users to upload and sell photos for low prices. The artists make about 25 cents a download, but it adds up. Forbes reports that last year, iStock paid photographers $20.9 million in royalties on $71.9 million in revenue. One man interviewed for the article has made $2000 on a snapshot of his wife.
Very interesting model here. Being able to make a living selling lots of little pieces of media (that you may be making anyway) is a nice option. This same system could be used for music loops and beats, stock video, sound effects, clip art. The micro job possibilities are endless.

Popcuts Pays for Trendsetting Purchases

Popcuts is a new site that has a unique business model for its users. The approach essentially rewards trendsetters for spotting new music that later becomes popular. Let’s say you buy a song you like soon after the artist uploads it for the industry standard 99 cents; as it becomes popular you are rewarded for being an early fan and consumer. The credit you receive for your trend spotting is dependent on the point you jump on the bandwagon.
The site currently boasts a paltry library of 700 songs, but artists are encouraged to upload their own content and Popcuts only takes between 10-20% of the revenue. Another issue is that the only payment option is in credit for more song purchases from the site. The top three earners on the site have amassed a combined fortune of almost $40. Time will tell how successful this model becomes, especially among the many music recommendation sites, but it’s certainly an interesting approach to reward early fans for driving more people to particular artists

CLhack Visual Craigslist Search

CLhack is a visual search tool for Craigslist. The site lists Craigslist ads in a visual grid that makes it extremely easy to quickly scan for what you want.
The interface is similar to a web browser. On the left hand side is a long list of States, subdivided into cities and Craigslist categories. Searches come up in a tabbed list at the top of the window, and clicking on any image brings up detailed listing information.
Very useful application that should help speed up search time and help users find what they’re looking for.

William Brownstein of Kids Rx
Kids Rx is a pharmacy in Manhattan which caters entirely to the needs of young children. While they are equipped to serve the whole family, what sets them apart is their ability to customize medications for patients (and parents) specific needs. This kid-friendly pharmacy is actually able to add flavoring to medications, mix it into candies, or even put it into transdermal gels. Their playful, bright atmosphere and the variety of specialty products helps make the otherwise dismal business of sick children far more bearable.
The Great people at PSFK stopped by their West Village outlet to chat with William Brownstein, founder of Kids Rx, to discuss some of the difficulties of administering medication to children and how Kids Rx makes it easier.

Ritchie Hawtin Shows Off the Future of DJing
Djing has changed so much over the last few decades. I remember when I first saw turntables got to cds and then go to digital formats. I just thought it wasnt truely djing. But, everything has to evovle and progress. So, in a sense I am happy to be able to hear new music with different techniques being applied.
Here you will see and hear Ritchie break down the new advances in technology for dj's to step up and advance the skills.
"Techno artist Ritchie Hawtin has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to incorporating new technology in his DJ sets. From his early days using a Roland TR-909 drum machine and 4 turntables, to his present day set up, Hawtin is one to watch as far as whats-coming-next tech.
Hawtin made a great video explaining his current laptop based DJ rig. The tools he’s using in the demo are Traktor software and an Allen & Heath mixer/MIDI controller combo. Although the software auto-syncs up to four different tracks (which many would consider “cheating”), Hawtin explains that gives him much more room to play with the music in other ways. Fascinating watch, for anyone interested in DJing, live performance and next level gear."

I miss the bay area!

Living abroad is difficult. I find myself missing insignificant things that I never imagined I'd be missing! I miss good Mexican food from "La Costa" in Oakley, I miss the smell and food on "Fisherman's Wharf" I miss the sunny days, fresh cut grass and the people.
What I really miss is the diversification that is present. If you are from the Bay the you know what I mean. You have so many choices ranging from cities, food, clubs, activities, etc..
In Germany, I haven't experienced this feeling, this eclectic auroa that I get in the Bay Area. I have seen and done as much as possible, trying to get the full European experience. Taking weekend trips to Paris, Frankfurt and Barcelona really gave me a new respect for different cultures and ways of living.
But, when it comes down to it there is no better feeling than waking up to that cool bay breeze and having the world at your finger tips.
Self Edge, San Francisco. New Project

This second Rough Cut video features a visit to San Francisco's Self Edge denim shop. Owner Kiya Babzani talks about denim, leather, obsession with detail and shows us some of the new collaborations they will be launching this fall.
Kiya carefully curates what products the store carries, and specializes in brands that mostly use Japanese-made denim woven on looms from the 1960s and earlier. Self Edge offers brands that appeal to true denim connoisseurs, including The Flat Head, Iron Heart, Imperial, Mister Freedom, and Sugar Cane.
Kiya shares his inspiration and motivation, thoughts on craftsmanship, and a look at some upcoming product. Included in the Fall line-up is the SEXTW07 Self Edge x Triple Works collaboration and new cuts from Iron Heart. We also see the Self Edge x Flat Head chambray shirt.
The front window features an installation by artist Sidney Lo, his recently completed 365-days-in-the-same-Flat Head-jeans self portrait series, What Are You Wearing Today? (pictured above courtesy of Sidney Lo).
We had a great visit with Kiya and his wife Demitra Georgopoulos, a partner in the store. Kiya also showed us a few tricks on his Anti Yo, another of his passions and business ventures, and introduced us to a few yo-yo pros at one of their meet-ups.
Air Jordan I Retro Velcro

As an unforeseen drop for many, the Air Jordan I has recently been released in a low-top Velcro form. Although many should have grown out of Velcro sneakers in grade 2, the slight redeeming quality of these can be attributed to a classic Bulls colorway. While Millenium Shoes is among the first to receive their shipment, look for these at your local Jordan dealer.
